Animated and Interactive Water Science Project 2008

Dr Ross Thompson and PhD Student Susie Ho from the Monash Freshwater Ecology Research Group test water quality at the Jock Marshall Reserve.

Welcome to the Monash Science Centre Animated and Interactive Water Science Project for 2008.

This project aims to bring current research based science to Year 9 and 10 secondary school students and teachers around the theme of Water Science.

Six Victorian secondary schools from a variety of sectors will work with scientists and research students from the Monash University Freshwater Ecology Research Group on an ecological restoration project at the Jock Marshall Scientific Reserve located on the Monash University Clayton Campus.

As part of the project, secondary school students will visit the Jock Marshall Reserve to gain an understanding of highly topical water quality issues and chemistry skills. Following their visits, students will remotely monitor the reserve through an animated web-based interface from their classrooms. Monash University research students will visit the schools to mentor students in the scientific process and to assist them with the science.

Throughout this process the school teachers will receive professional development on the science and use of the animated web based interface and will assist the students in the development of their own water science projects. Student projects will culminate in a science presentation night by the secondary schools.

Project Funding

This project is funded by the Department of Education, Science and Training (DEST) as part of their Australian School Innovation in Science, Technology and Mathematics (ASISTM) Program.

In addition, the Monash University Freshwater Ecology Research Group provides in-kind support for the project through the provision of:

  • Scientific intellectual content for the development and implementation of the program.
  • Provision and training of Teacher Associates from Monash University.
